On some occasions, the aphid generates a filamentous cottony secretion, which protects them from external agents. They preferentially settle in cracks and wounds in woody areas, from where they extract the sap of various ornamental species (eg, poplar aphid, Phloeomyzus passeerinii) or agricultural species (woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum).
